Oliver Oguz

MANAGING DIRECTOR, CHARTERED TRADE MARK ATTORNEY

LLB (Hons), LLM, PGCert Trade Mark Law and Practice, Trade Mark
Practice Professional Certificate

Education & Experience

After completing a Diploma in Business & Finance, Oliver read a Bachelors degree in law at the University of West London, and then went on to complete a Master’s degree in Intellectual Property and Competition Law at King’s College, London. He then undertook the Post Graduate Certificate in Trade Mark Law and Practice at Queen Mary University, London and has completed the Professional Certificate in Trade Mark Practice at Nottingham Law School.

He has also completed the Trade Mark Administrator and Paralegals course run by CITMA. He continues to study in order to learn as much as he can about IP, and is currently finishing the IP Litigation and an IP Advocacy course at Nottingham Trent University.

Oliver has worked as part of the in-house legal team of a US multi-national internet corporation that is globally known for its web portal, search engine and related services. Before founding Trade Mark Wizards, he worked as a trade mark lawyer and senior consultant at an established IP consultancy firm, dealing with trade mark related issues across the board, from searching, filing and prosecuting trade mark applications globally to advising on contentious issues such as oppositions, cancellations, infringement actions and domain name disputes.

Oliver is familiar with the practices and procedures at the UKIPO, EUIPO, WIPO, Nominet and ICANN. He has been involved a wide variety of litigation, from the IPEC, to the Chinese Supreme Court, to the Qatari Civil and Criminal Courts.

Trade Mark Achievements

On his first year of taking over Trade Mark Wizards, under his sold management, the firm became the UK’s No.1 Trade Mark filer according to official UKIPO and CITMA statistics.

He has also been responsible for a large trade mark portfolio of a leading manufacturer and distributor of computer hardware, having acted in more than 70 disputes including infringements, oppositions and cancellations, for that same client, and maintaining a 100% record for winning cases and obtaining favourable settlements.

What do client’s say about Oliver?

Clients describe Oliver as “a great client handler who is extremely commercial, even in his legal thinking” and someone who can “break down a complex situation very quickly and come up with a solid, comprehensive solution on the spot”.

What Oliver enjoys about the trade marks profession?

“It’s simple… a company’s brand and reputation is the basis of all consideration afforded to the business and can perhaps be seen as the most important of business assets, after the people who work within the organisation. It gives me great pleasure having the responsibility of being in charge of protecting such important IP assets, the existence of which can be crucial to the survival of a business”.

What kind of trade mark work does Oliver enjoy?

“I enjoy creating and devising focused trade mark filing strategies by anticipating potential challenges to trade mark applications, in order to ensure trade marks are registered as fast as possible, with the lowest risk of encountering third party challenges or formal proceedings during the process. I also enjoy finding commercial solutions during settlement negotiations in order to avoid contentious proceedings”.

What bit of advice would Oliver give to all businesses if he had the chance?

“If you are in business and you are providing goods or services under a brand name, then you need a trade mark registration… there is no need to think twice. Don’t simply wait for someone to start using a confusingly similar mark and then try to take action against them because, mark my words, you will be severely on your back foot end up, spend so much more money, with sometimes a very slim chance of success”.

What he likes about Trade Mark Wizards?

“I really love my team. The company has such a down-to-earth working culture with a strict focus on delivery – what clients need from us, they get from us! Clients see us as an integrated part of their in-house legal and marketing team, rather than external lawyers, which really helps in building that trusting, long-term relationship”.

Life outside Trade Mark Wizards

When Oliver is not in the office he spends time with his family and friends. He enjoys inventing new cocktails and, at the moment, is learning how to cook.

As a child, what did Oliver want to be when he grew up?

Oliver wanted to start his own ice cream factory so that he would get free ice creams. To date, there is no such ice cream factory, and he is still spending a fortune every week at the local ice cream parlour.
